Say: Set in a future where the Capitol selects a boy and girl from the
twelve districts to fight to the death on live television, Katniss Everdeen
volunteers to take her younger sister's place for the latest match.
Immediate Opinion: I was pretty nervous through the first 15 minutes or
so because of the shaky cam filming style.
It gets pretty old fast and gets to a point where it’s almost headache
inducing. Luckily that started to cut
out once they were on the train and then just became sporadically sprinkled
in. Besides that, I loved the film. As a big fan of the book ages before it
became the hottest YA series since Twilight, I was really curious as to how
close to the book the film would be.
Well, I was pretty surprised.
They stayed VERY close to the source material. Obviously it’s been a bit since I read the
first book, but the only main thing I remember them changing was the scene
where Gale and Katniss meet the girl in the woods who later gets caught and has
her tongue cut out when she is turned into an Avox.
More In Depth Look At The Plot: Jennifer Lawrence does a wonderful
job as Katniss Everdeen who volunteers to take her sisters place in a 24 person
fight to the death. She and the chosen
boy from her district, Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson), have to use their
mentor Haymitch Abernathy’s (Woody Harrelson) knowledge from his past Hunger
Games victory (the only District 12 victor ever) and the bit of survival
training they get in the Capitol to increase their odds of survival. However, it soon becomes apparent that
Katniss’s instincts, skills with a bow and arrow, and hunting/tracking ability
may be the only true chance District 12 has to get a victor. The games begin and… well I can’t really tell
you what happens next, can I? Obviously
if you’ve read the books then you know, but if not just trust me, I think
you’ll definitely enjoy it.
Memorable Scene: Katniss with Cinna right before the start of the
Games. Beautifully acted by both Kravitz
and Lawrence.
Final Grade: 4.5/5 - A Must See (-0.5 because of that annoying filming
style at the beginning of the movie)
